Why We Use Plantable Tags and Monitor Every Step of Our Sustainable Process
At Alice Ganesan, sustainability is not just a commitment—it’s our identity. Every choice we make, from seed to stitch, is guided by our responsibility to the environment and the communities we work with.
One of our proudest innovations is our plantable tags. These are not ordinary clothing tags. They are handmade with biodegradable paper embedded with native seeds, designed to be planted after use. When watered and cared for, each tag grows into a plant—symbolizing rebirth, responsibility, and regeneration.
The Urgency: Deforestation and Fashion's Impact
Globally, 10 million hectares of forest are lost every year—an area roughly the size of South Korea. India alone lost over 668,400 hectares of natural forest between 2001 and 2020. The consequences are devastating: habitat loss, rising temperatures, water scarcity, and increased carbon emissions.
And the fashion industry is far from innocent.
The fashion industry accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions, more than international flights and maritime shipping combined.
It is the second-largest consumer of water, using approximately 93 billion cubic meters annually.
Around 87% of all textiles end up in landfills or incinerators, with tags, labels, and packaging contributing to this waste.
These figures highlight why plantable tags are not a gimmick, but a necessary innovation. Each time a customer plants our tag, they're contributing to reforestation—a proven method to fight climate change and restore ecosystems.
Beyond Tags: Sustainability in Every Thread
At Alice Ganesan, our values go beyond the surface. Every detail of our production is designed to minimize harm and maximize care.
Wash care labels are printed using natural ink made from minerals and plants. This eliminates the need for chemical-based inks that pollute water systems and pose health risks to artisans.
Our entire production—from dyeing to stitching—is closely monitored in-house. We prioritize natural dyes, local resources, and traditional techniques to reduce our carbon footprint.
No plastic packaging, no synthetic dyes, no exploitation—only ethical, transparent, and conscious choices.
Regenerative Fashion: A Way Forward
The future of fashion must be regenerative—not just less harmful, but actively beneficial. Our plantable tags are symbolic of that philosophy. They ask: What if every piece of clothing helped a tree to grow? What if your fashion choices could clean the air, feed the soil, and support a rural artisan?
When you wear Alice Ganesan, you carry that hope—and plant it
